NEW CITY – OLD CITY: A sculpture exhibit by the Nordin Brothers

The Detroit Design Center, comprised of renown artists Erik and Israel Nordin, are proud to present “New City – Old City” a collection of metal and glass fusion sculptures. All of these original works of art will be on display at the Chase Building Monday October 8^th through November 2^nd, 2012.

Erik and Israel Nordin combined their creative talents in 2001 to create the Detroit Design Center. For over a decade the Design Center has had the opportunity to create unique, one of a kind objects for personal and corporate spaces. These two brothers who originate from metro Detroit, Michigan, use metal, blown glass, wood and other mediums to tell their story. “New City – Old City,” is their most current sculpture collection. It is a body of work Israel and Erik Nordin created on pure personal inspiration and their process. “Heavy influences for this show include the City of Detroit, Erik Nordin stated. Its historic architecture and current revival gather great stimulation.” Israel Nordin added, “Motivation for these pieces also come from personal stories and watching one’s soul emerge in the eyes of chaos.” The different views from each Nordin brother make each piece come to life.

Quicken Aquarium

This video features a coral reef created out of hand blown glass. The aquarium is located at Quicken Loans Detroit Headquarters, located in the Rock Companies Executive Suites. This functioning salt water tank has 22 species of glass coral inspired by real species. Detroit Design Artists Israel and Erik Nordin work along side of a team of glass blowers included our brother Chris Nordin and our brother in law Giddian Rockwood for over four months on this sculptural piece.

Madison Theater

We recently finished work for the new Madison Theater office complex in Detroit Michigan. Working with the super talented Jaime Neher and the folks at Neumann-Smith as well as Sasche Construction – we were commissioned to create three sets of antiqued Marquee letters for the offices in the building. “Work, Live and Play” were intended to add an artistic playful mood and add an additional light feature to the building.
